Adolescent Counseling in West Michigan

The teenage years can be some of the most challenging for teens and for the parents who love them. Clarity Counseling & Coaching provides adolescent counseling in Caledonia and throughout West Michigan for teens ages 13 and up, offering a safe, confidential space to work through the pressures of growing up.

Growing Up is Hard. Getting Help Doesn’t Have to Be.

Teens today face enormous pressure from school, social media, relationships, sports, and family dynamics. When a young person is struggling, it can be hard for them to open up to parents or friends. And it can be hard for parents to know how to help.

Our trained counselors at Clarity specialize in working with adolescents across Caledonia, Kentwood, Grand Rapids, and West Michigan communities creating a space where teens feel heard, not lectured.

What to Expect in Teen Counseling Sessions

What happens in sessions?

Sessions are one-on-one between the teen and their counselor. The first meeting focuses on getting to know your teen; their world, their stressors, and what they want to get out of counseling. From there, sessions are guided by what's most pressing for them, at a pace that feels manageable.

How do counselors connect with teens?

Our counselors are trained to meet teens where they are without judgment, without pressure, and without talking down to them. We use age-appropriate, evidence-based approaches that help young people build self-awareness, emotional regulation, and coping skills they'll carry into adulthood.

How involved are parents?

That depends on the situation and the teen's age. We prioritize confidentiality for teens so they feel safe being open. Parents may be involved in initial sessions or periodic check-ins as appropriate your counselor will discuss this with your family at the start of care.

Common Questions About Teen & Adolescent Counseling

AT WHAT AGE CAN MY CHILD START COUNSELING AT CLARITY?

We work with adolescents ages 13 and up. If you're unsure whether your teen is ready, reach out — we're happy to talk through it with you.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY TEEN ACTUALLY NEEDS COUNSELING?

If your teen is withdrawing from people or activities they used to enjoy, showing frequent mood changes, struggling at school, or going through something hard (bullying, a loss, family changes), counseling can help. You don't need to wait for a crisis — earlier support is often more effective.

WILL MY TEEN ACTUALLY UP TO A COUNSELOR?

Our counselors are trained to connect with teens on their own terms — no lectures, no pressure, no judgment. The first session is focused on simply getting to know your teen and building trust. Many teens are more willing to talk to someone outside the family.

HOW INVOLVED WILL I BE AS A PARENT?

Parent involvement depends on the teen's age and situation. Confidentiality is a priority so your teen feels safe being honest. You may be included in the initial session and periodic check-ins, which your counselor will discuss with your family at the start.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS IN A COUNSELING SESSION?

Sessions are one-on-one between your teen and their counselor. The first meeting is about understanding your teen — their world, pressures, and goals. From there, each session is guided by what's most relevant to them at a pace they're comfortable with.

WHAT KINDS OF ISSUES DOES TEEN COUNSELING ADDRESS?

Clarity works with teens navigating anxiety, depression, stress, low self-esteem, academic pressure, bullying, grief, trauma, identity, athletic pressure, and difficult family changes like divorce. If something is weighing on your teen, it's worth talking about.

DO YOU OFFER TELEHEALTH FOR TEENS?

Yes. In addition to in-person sessions in Caledonia, we offer telehealth counseling — which can make it easier for busy teens to get consistent support from home.
